There's no need to completely encircle the area, because it takes heat a long time to leak through a lot of terrain. And I leave it open on the far side so the terrain can condense the steam. Once it goes dormant it can be formally tamed.

Seal it off immediately to stop the heat an drown the vent could use it to make an A/c for the base, heat dump. Could also make a oil pipe loop for a refiner to heat the steam. If you surround it with a vacuum you can add a aquatuner and make a cold box near by for food storage.

If you keep it pressurized you can make oxylite or bleach stone. Also great for advanced materials fabrication or geotuners.

In this scenario I'd be very happy, because I love having clean water sources near the base. The Super Computer, Microbe Musher, Algae Terrarium are all perfectly happy being fed hot water which allows saving the cool water for things like Bristle Blossom. To address the heating, I would research Insulated Tiles pretty fast, they aren't high tech, and then build a wall of insulated tiles, roughly as shown by the orange lines:

Santos watch, large model, mechanical movement with automatic reassembly 1847 mc. Steel box, 7 -sided crown decorated with a faceted synthetic spine, silver opalin dial, blue steel sword -shaped needles, sapphire ice cream. Steel bracelet with "smartlink" size system. Second veal bracelet, with interchangeable steel deploying loop. The two bracelets are equipped with the "Quickswitch" interchangeability system. Box width: 39.8 mm, thickness: 9.08 mm. Waterproof up to 10 bars (~ 100 meters).

Wall it off and cover it with water to stop it from erupting so it doesn't cook your base until you can build an ST/AT to cool it.  Or maybe just start over on a less bad map.  Getting an open steam vent that isn't dormant right away like that is harsh.  You may not even be able to get dupes in to wall it off without being scalded to death.

Hello! I just started a new map and got a cool steam vent in very close proximity to my base. I am wondering what the best approach would be if I want to tame the vent and use both water and steam?

Cooling the water takes a decent amount of power but may be necessary if it's your only water. Recommend getting solar or geothermal quickly. Or phosphorus an weezewort.

To answer the original question: Steam at this temperature is pretty useless. What you do to use the water is the same you do for all hot water: You cool it down or you use it in an anti-SPOM to generate Hydrogen. I recently built some anti-SPOMs again with the original design and they still work very nicely and are highly efficient.

Hopefully it goes without saying, that while the heat leaking into the terrain isn't going to be a problem in general, don't make your Bristle Blossom farms right where the heat is leaking out, like the heat is not going to be a problem as in it's not going to scald dupes or anything like that but it'll still climb to something like 50 C.
