According to national averages from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for an entry-level plumber in 2020 was $59,880 per year or $28.78 per hour.* The average salary can vary based on experience, where you work, and the state in which you live.

Licensing and certification requirements for plumbers can vary from state to state. However, most states and some localities require plumbers to be licensed. Although licensing requirements vary, states and localities often require workers to have 2 to 5 years of experience and to pass an exam that shows their knowledge of the trade before allowing plumbers to work independently. Entry-level plumbers may need to complete an apprenticeship under experienced workers or supervisors after graduating from a trade school or vocational program. The Series 825Y Reduced Pressure Zone assemblies feature a flood sensor with SentryPlus Alert® technology. This advanced feature is activated through an add-on connection kit, allowing it to detect excessive water discharges from the relief valve. It can trigger the alert system, sending a notification of flood detection to facility personnel. With this technology, you can rest easy knowing that potential floods are detected and addressed promptly. Connection kits are available for BMS and cellular communication.

Learning to become a plumber usually combines a formal vocational education with an apprenticeship post-graduation. While the online plumber course from Penn Foster can be completed around your schedule, paid apprenticeships can take anywhere from 2 to 5 years to complete.

Licensing and/or certification requirements for jobs in this field are not the same in every state and may include educational, testing, and/or experiential requirements beyond those offered in the Penn Foster Program. Prospective students should contact the state professional licensing board or similar regulatory body in the state(s) where they plan to work to determine their requirements before enrolling in this program. See the State Licensing page for contact information for state licensing/regulatory boards and certain industry licensing information.
