Basically, If you lose water pressure to your house, the water in the house will flow out to the mainline. Because pressure is now reversed, going from the house to the mainline, it creates a siphon effect and will pull anything in the sprinkler system and in the puddles around the sprinkler system with it. If your garden hose was on at the same time, it becomes a siphon hose. To winterize your backflow, turn the water off. Drain the backflow. Next, turn the valves 45°. Then take two towels, one to dry off the backflow and another to wrap the device. Finally, secure the towel around the assembly with a plastic bag and tape.

In case it's a broken poppet, you'll want to first shut off the water flow through the bottom valve, perpendicular to the pipe. Next, unscrew the plastic bonnet. Remove any plastic still inside. There should be no plastic in the device. Next, screw in the replacement bonnet. Remember to only hand tighten. Finally, replace the bell on top and open the valves.
