Founded 135 years ago by English emigrant, Joseph Edwin Watts, the Watts Regulator Co. supplied steam and water pressure regulators to the nascent textile manufacturing industry in Lawrence, Mass. The original Webster Valve plant, built in Franklin in 1959, occupied 73,000 square feet, to accommodate the then new generation of manufacturing equipment, including automatic screw machines, computerized numerical control machining centers and lathes, and was augmented by the building of a new foundry, Webster Foundry, in Franklin to provide it with the cast parts needed for the manufacture of a wide variety of valves and other water control devices.

Currently, Watts is in the process of returning dozens of manufacturing jobs from non-U.S. factories to its Webster Valve facility in Franklin, thereby increasing its number of full-time employees within the state by over 25 percent from 2008 levels.
