I had done some research on different home water filtration systems. I am renting so I knew I couldn't buy anything that required any physcial adjustments to the property. When replacing your filter, separate the components. The plastic parts can be recycled, but the carbon block should be disposed of with regular waste, as it has absorbed contaminants.
